On Mark 1 Japanese imports all the cars, from the factory, have mechanical clocks indicating the number of KMs the car has travelled.

When we import Mark 1 cars we simply change the face of the speedo face to ensure the speed of the car is indicated primarily in Miles. Even though the speed of the car is indicated in miles the actual distance the car has travelled in its life, the odometer, is kept in KM. We do not fit a mechanical converter of any kind. This ensures that we do not need to physically tamper with the odometer to convert it to miles as several of the more shady motor traders have been known to do.

Mark 2 cars have digital odometers. When we import these cars we install a converter that converts the speedo into MPH. From the point that the converter is installed (eg: the time it arrives in the UK) the odometer then ticks over in miles. Therefore a little mental arithmetic is involved to get the mileage pinned down.

Example:
A Mark 2 car is imported into the UK with 100,000 kms on the clock (approx. 62137 Miles)
It is fitted with a converter at Dandycars.com which means the clock now ticks over in Miles.

So if the odometer now reads 150000 it means it has done (100,000 kms=) 62137 miles plus (150000-100000=) 50000 miles equals 112137 miles in total.

Confused? Wishing you listened in maths? Don't worry! We keep records of exactly how many kms each car has travelled at the time we receive it in the uk and we are quite happy to provide customers who have bought Mark 2s freshly imported with a signed letter from us certifying the mileage to be as far as we are aware absolutely correct (although clocking is very rare in Japan).

When we import Mark 3 cars we send the odometer away to a company that converts the digital odometer over to miles AND sets it to the correct equivalent mileage, so the odometer will have the correct mileage showing AND will tick over in miles.

Yes, we know it might sound confusing - for any further information please contact us!

  Mark,
Thanks for clarifying this point. When I first calculated fuel consumption on our Mk2, expecting the odometer to be still ticking over with Km, I was horrified to see 17mpg smilies/sad.gif. Knowing the ticks are now in miles gives 25mpg+ which is not so bad with my heavy right foot smilies/grin.gif. The sticker on the dash tells me how to convert Km to miles - is there a more helpful sticker, or should I just remove it smilies/undecided.gif?
Cheers,
Frank

The sticker wychwoods is referring to is one we stick on the odometer glass - it states to roughly convert what is on the clock to miles, divide by 8 then multiply by 5. These stickers are removable.
