The NR-A is a base model built for track-day enthusiasts and racing. Funnily enough, extras such as air-con, electric windows, etc are included on the model even though they would probably be one of the first things removed by the serious racer.- Years Produced:

Mazda Motor Corporation has added the base model "NR-A" to the open sports car Roadster lineup. This new model has been designed for the beginner who is interested in competing in motor sport races. The Roadster "NR-A" goes on sale today at Mazda Anfini dealerships throughout Japan, as well as selected Mazda dealerships.
Powered by a 1600 DOHC engine, "NR-A" is equipped with enhanced suspension and brakes, and increased radiator capacity. The Mazdaspeed "NR-A" dealer option package (6-point expression roll gauge, 4-point expression seat belts/seat belt anchor, and front/rear large pulling hooks) is available. Installing these options, users are eligible to enter Roadster One Make Races, authorized by JAF (Japan Automobile Federation), in the "NR-A" category.
The new model is also designed as a registered vehicle, which enables users to the car on a daily basis, while participating in races on weekends. The base price of the "NR-A" model is set at an affordable 2,048,000 yen.
With its first model being launched in September 1989, Roadster has been developed with the concept of oneness between car and driver, and has been favorably received throughout the world with its excellent maneuverability, exhilaration of its open and distinctive styling. Mazda aims to offer customers a new dimension of enjoyment of Roadster through the addition of the "NR-A."
Along with the "NR-A" launch, Mazda will sponsor the Roadster One Make Race "Roadster Party Race" in the "NR-A" category, authorized by JAF. The event will be held in Japan from May 2002. Offering a new car lifestyle, with families and friends can enjoy participating in races on weekends, Mazda aims to increase the number of users who are interested in motor sports, as well as enhance the Mazda brand image.
